Wednesday, May 27, 2015

Congratulations!

Lindsay Rogers, Volunteer Extraordinaire!

A huge congratulations to Lindsay Rogers who has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Festivals & Events PEI Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for Prince County!  We are so pleased that Lindsay is to receive this award this evening in Charlottetown.  He is very deserving of this recognition and we appreciate all the help Lindsay has given us over the years.  Congratulations!

This year we were pleased to have 24 of our step dance students take part in BATD medal tests, which test a student’s ability in their respective levels of dance according to BATD standards. The results are now in, and out of scores ranging from a fail to highly commended, all of the students who participated received scores of either commended or highly commended (very rare). We would like to extend congratulations on great performances to those hard working students involved and we hope to see even more participation in the years to come!

Circle the date of June 14th!  It's Year End Recital time!  Please join us in the Mary Ellen Burns Amphitheatre to celebrate our students and what they have accomplished over the year!  We have such talented students, young and old, so let’s celebrate their achievements together.  The recital is free of charge and will be held rain or shine.

Happy May!

April snow brings May flowers?!  I must admit, spring has not been kind to us so far.  There are still piles of snow on the ground, the flowers are struggling to poke through the ground and I think I saw some geese heading back down south again.  No matter what the weather is like outside, the College is busy, busy, busy and a little snow late in the spring won't slow us down!  May is jammed packed full of events so keep your calendar at the ready so you don't miss a thing!

We need your help!!!  Now that the snow is finally starting to melt, we are looking for volunteers to come out and get some fresh air while we get the grounds and Highland Storm set ready for another summer.  The chosen date for this is Saturday, May 16th at 9am (with an alternative date of May 23rd).  Please keep your eyes peeled to our Facebook page, your inbox and this space to be kept up on the latest volunteer opportunities.  If you haven't volunteered before, we would love to have you join The College team, so contact Sue at (902) 436-5377 or sue.mcgiveron@collegeofpiping.com.

A note to piping and drumming students:  James is strongly encouraging you all to give serious consideration to the opportunity provided by the partnership between the College and the National Piping Centre from Glasgow.  He used to drive across Saskatchewan, Alberta, into Montana and across to Idaho to get this sort of opportunity to learn.  You might just need to brave the Blue Shank Road or even Granville Street to get this same kind of chance!  It really is here in your backyard.  It is a school that runs the week of July 5-10, with multiple lessons per day from different instructors, and evening activities.  You just need to be available that week, and register through the Piping Centre:  http://www.thepipingcentre.co.uk/bagpipe-drumming-schools/  You’d learn lots and have piles of fun!

The College of Piping – Brave of Heart Run is coming up on Sunday, May 31st at 5pm.  Registration at 4pm and the cost is $15. This is a fundraising run in support of our Highland dancers as they raise money to travel to London, Ontario to compete in the Scot Dance Canada Championship Series in July.  There will be draws for door prizes, prizes for the winners in each distance as well as unique awards for all who finish the race.  We are looking for volunteers to help with course marshaling, water stations, etc.  For further information about the run, or to volunteer, please contact Sue McGiveron at 902-436-5377 or via email at sue.mcgiveron@collegeofpiping.com.  We hope to see lots of people participating, so spread the word and keep an eye on our Facebook page and this space for updates as we get closer to race day!
