Breaking news!  The College now has a College of Piping Grade 2 Pipe Band for the first time in its history!  The Grade 3 group is ready for the challenge of a new grade level.  To read about this exciting announcement, please follow this link: http://www.journalpioneer.com/News/Local/2014-10-17/article-3907152/Pipe-band-at-College-of-Piping-reaching-new-levels/1.

Photograph and Video Recording Consent forms are being sent home this week.  As you know, the College keeps its website and social media content current.  That often includes photos and videos of staff and students.  Instructors will be asking students and families to sign a waiver and release form so we have your permission (or not!) to use the images for electronic or print materials.  Please make sure that these are returned in a timely manner.

The first order of the Aviva FundScrip is almost due!  The first official due date is October 29th at 4pm and these can be turned in to Sue at The College.  In the November newsletter, there will be information about how you can still support us, without having to order directly through us at the College.  You can set up your own account and order online and have them shipped directly to you. You can even order them in your pajamas!  Please do not hesitate to contact Sue McGiveron at The College if you have any questions.  Sue can be reached by either email,   sue.mcgiveron@collegeofpiping.com, or by phone, 436-5377.

Not sure what FundScrip is? It's an easy and unique way to support The College.  All you have to do is purchase gift cards (for example:  Sobeys, Superstore, Esso, M&M Meats, Canadian Tire, Indigo, Marks Work Wearhouse, Payless Shoes, the Running Room, Staples, Winners, Shoppers Drug Mart and many more!) and then use those gift cards to purchase the items you would normally buy. We aren’t asking you for a donation, all we are asking you to do is use a different form of payment to make your usual purchases, which then benefits us!  It is really that simple!  Drop by the College to pick up an order form to order any of these gift cards through us!

A Robbie Burns Fundraising Gala is being planned for Saturday, January 24, 2015.  The reception will begin at 6:30 pm with a traditional Robbie Burns Roast Beef Dinner at 7:00 pm.  Entertainment will be provided by the faculty and students of The College of Piping. Tickets are $100.00 per person with a $75.00 tax receipt.  A table of 8 will be $800.00.  There is limited seating available so get your tickets early. Last year, the event sold out.  Do not be disappointed!!!  A complimentary shuttle service from Charlottetown to Summerside and return is available.  This is the main fundraiser for The College of Piping so your support is appreciated to help us get through the year.  As a non-profit organization, we are always looking for new and creative ways to raise the funds that will enable us to continue to provide educational programs, encourage students to learn and grow in their disciplines, and offer continued growth in the Celtic Performing Arts.

Wet and Windy Friday!

It's a blustery day on the isle of the bright red mud and spuds but at least the temperatures are above normal.  The humidity has made a brief return and hopefully the rest of autumn will continue to be this mild.  Fingers crossed!

The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada did not advance automatically to the semi-finals of the Aviva Community Fund, there is still time to get there.  The next round of voting will start on Monday and we need everyone's help! Every vote counts to get us back in to the running. We are hoping to access funds to upgrade our aging amphitheatre by having a new roof made, new walls and more comfortable cushions on the benches. By changing our existing venue through the purchase of upgraded materials and equipment, we will be able to create an environment that is safer and more modern, thus helping to enhance the experience for both our performers and visitors.  This competition is won by votes and we need each and every one of you to assist us in the voting process.  Please check this space out on Monday, October 20th for the link to start voting again. EVERY VOTE COUNTS!!!

Happy Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday after a long weekend!  The sun is shining and the air filled with warmth...it's hard to believe that Thanksgiving was celebrated this past weekend.  If too much turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pumpkin pie have left you more than a little lethargic, the best way to shake off those delicious treats is by practicing!  A few extra dance steps or minutes on your instrument is a great way to put that spring back in your step!

A very Happy Birthday to our fabulous Executive Director, Karen Hatcher.  Karen's birthday landed on the holiday weekend.  On behalf of everyone at The College, Happy Birthday Karen!

The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada is holding its AGM on November 4th, 2014, at 3:00 pm.  It will be held in the main hall at The College in Summerside.  All members of the public are welcome to attend.

Our "At Long Last" CD has been reviewed on the pipes|drums website!  The release of the CD is in celebration of The College's 25th anniversary.  It's a unique project in that every performer on this album is either an instructor or student, or a cast member in The College's summer production Highland Storm.  The album also has original tracks that you won't find anywhere else and are performed by their composers.  How cool is that?!  This recording truly reflects our mandate which is "Inspiring excellence in Celtic performing arts through quality educational programming."  It is also available in our gift shop.  Unfortunately the review is only available to subscribers of the website (which is an independent news source and all proceeds from its memberships are put back in to the maintenance and development of the magazine). For people who are subscribers, please follow this link for the review:  http://www.pipesdrums.com/article/long-lasting-impression/.

The news that The College will no longer hold its annual Summerside Highland Gathering was published by the CBC this past weekend.  As posted on this blog on Friday, The College has made the extremely hard decision to take this route. Instead The College will still hold competitions but in a different format.  To read the CBC article, please follow this link: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/highland-gathering-ending-in-favour-of-new-events-1.2795115.

Happy Turkey Day!

Happy Thanksgiving!  Turkey, gravy, island potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie...my mouth is watering just thinking about the traditional Thanksgiving supper.  Don't forget that The College is closed on Monday, October 13th.  Remember, if you eat too much this weekend, practicing is a good way to burn off those extra calories!

If you were reading the Journal Pioneer this week, you may have noticed the front page story on Thursday, October 9th. The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada will no longer hold its annual Highland Gathering.  The College will still hold competitions but just in a different format.  In 2015 a highland dance contest will still be held but it will be broadened by encompassing workshops the following day.  A partnership is in development with the National Piping Centre (Scotland) to hold workshops and a summer school at The College.  To read the article, please follow this link:  http://www.journalpioneer.com/News/Local/2014-10-08/article-3897351/College-of-Piping-shelves-Highland-Gathering/1.

Have you voted yet?  It's not too late to sign up and every vote counts!!!  The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada has submitted an “idea” for the Aviva Competition. We are hoping to access some funds to upgrade our aging amphitheatre by having a new roof made, new walls and more comfortable cushions on the benches. By changing our existing venue through the purchase of upgraded materials and equipment, we will be able to create an environment that is safer and more modern, thus helping to enhance the experience for both our performers and visitors.  This competition is won by votes and we need each and every one of you to assist us in the voting process. Please go on line and cast your vote.  Registering only takes a minute of your time! Please reach out to all of your friends and family and colleagues and ask them to support our project by way of a vote. Our idea name is The College of Piping Inspiring Excellence Venue.  Our Idea Number is: ACF19453 and the Idea URL:  https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf19453.
You can only cast one vote per day for us, but you can vote every day!  Put it in your phone calendar to remind you!  It’s important to vote soon and continuously to get to the next round. Order forms need to be returned to Sue McGiveron before 4pm on Wednesday, October 29th.  There are monthly promotions, where we receive a higher percentage from gift card sales and October’s are:  SpaFinder – 15% (regular is 10%), La Vie en Rose – 10% (regular is 8%), HBC – 5% (regular 3%). So, if you are thinking about Christmas presents for people, October would be a great time to start purchasing gift cards for those on your list…or to purchase gift cards to purchase their presents! The information sheet as well as the two sided order form are available at the College of Piping office.

Happy October!

And Happy Friday!  What a gorgeous fall day!  The sun is shining, the temperature is warm-ish and it feels like snow is still a long ways off...hopefully!  The College is back in the thick of activity as band practices and dance company rehearsals have started for another year and students are on their third week of classes.  Time is already flying by.  Pretty soon we'll be talking about the summer!

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our dancers and band members at the car wash last Saturday at Hemphill GM in Summerside.  It was a fantastic day for a car wash and many squeaky clean cars were seen leaving the lot.  There was never a lull in washing, so it meant that there was a great deal of support from the community and for this, we thank you!

We are on day five of voting for the Aviva Community Fund and we are falling behind.  We know you love the College of Piping and we appreciate everything you do for us, but we really need you to vote.  It literally takes a minute to register (you don’t even have to put your last name in), confirm your email address, log in and vote for us.  It costs you nothing but a couple of minutes!  You can have your vote cast before your coffee or tea is brewed in the morning!  If you copy and paste this link into your browser, it will take you directly to our project: https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf19453.  Thank you in advance for your support!

The Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association is holding their annual general meeting and champion supreme awards on October 18th, 2014 in Truro at the Nova Scotia Community College.  They are also hosting a day long piping and drumming workshop.  Our own Director of Education, James MacHattie, will be facilitating the piping workshop.  To find out more about this fantastic learning opportunity, please follow this link:  http://acpba.ca/workshops/.

And finally, it's Friday:
