Happy Tuesday

Every year Dean MacDonald, a stalwart band member and volunteer extraordinaire, puts together a much anticipated video of College of Piping highlights. Dean outdoes himself every year and this year is no exception! Enjoy our year in review which is entitled "Marching to the Line". It's a look at what it takes to get a band from practice to "the line": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJaueyvTI3U.

The first of the Halifax Regimental Association Mini Gatherings took place at the end of January.  The College had three students competing. Calum Brydon was first place in grade two and Peter Allen was second in grade one. That evening the College took part in the first of three Pipers Club Atlantic sessions. Peter Allen was the featured amateur player and the College’s Principal, James MacHattie, was the featured professional soloist. The College’s Grade Two Pipe Band also had a trio perform of Peter Allen, Ian Luddington and James MacHattie. It was a lovely evening of fun, friendship and toe-tapping music! A huge thank you to the Dartmouth and District Pipe Band for putting on the Pipers Club Atlantic and to Bruce Gandy and his crew of volunteers for a great day of piping at the Citadel. The next mini gathering and Pipers Club will be on March 4th

Finally, It's Friday!

Our first Highland Pub Night made quite the impression on Guardian Journalist, Todd MacLean! Today's Guardian featured a lovely article on our inaugural event. We are so pleased that he enjoyed himself!  To read the article, please follow this link: http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/living/entertainment/2017/1/26/college-of-piping-s-pub-night-was-a-real-blast.html

The College of Piping is pleased to present its first Acadian Pub Night on Friday, February 17th.  We are looking forward to welcoming talented artists, Caroline Bernard, Patricia Richard and Remi Arsenault into our main hall for an evening of toe-tapping entertainment. Tickets can be purchased in advance through The College of Piping for $15 by dropping by during business hours or calling 902-436-5377.  If tickets remain on performance night, they can be purchased for $20 at the door.  Space will be limited, so don’t wait to book your ticket. Doors into the hall will open at 6:30pm and the performance kicks off at 7:15pm. Caroline, Patricia and Remi are musicians that are quite familiar to many Islanders.  They are all very talented and have performed in many groups and theatrical performances all over PEI and beyond.  Caroline has an intrinsic stage presence and provides haunting vocals in her songs that share stories of love, life and all things in between.  Patricia is a multi-instrumentalist and also does traditional Acadian step dancing.  She most recently appeared in Lenny Gallant’s hit musical “Searching for Abegweit”.  Remi grew up in a very musical family and was named Musician of the Year by Music PEI in 2010 and started playing drums, bass and guitar before he was 10 years old. We look forward to welcoming you to our Acadian Pub Night, it should be a lot of fun!

Not sure what to do this Saturday night in Halifax? Why not come out to the Pipers Club Atlantic! The first one is featuring our own Principal, James MacHattie and a quartet will play from our College's Grade Two Pipe Band. All the fun is taking place at the Old Triangle Alehouse. Come on out for some great tunes! For information on the event, please follow this link: https://www.pipesdrums.com/article/pipers-club-atlantic-starts-up-in-nova-scotia/.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the College at our annual Robbie Burns Fundraising Gala!  It was great night celebrating all things Robbie Burns!  The haggis was addressed by Andrew Campbell, the College's bands and dancers performed and Dr. Michael Linkletter said the Gaelic blessing. It was even featured in the local newspaper, the Journal Pioneer: http://www.journalpioneer.com/news/local/2017/1/22/robbie-burns-fundraising-gala-raises-local-spirits-saturday-nigh.html.

The College's grade two pipe band hard at work

If that wasn't enough, all three of our pipe bands practiced over the weekend. Our grade two and four bands spent Saturday and Sunday working hard at the College and our grade five pipe band spent Saturday morning diligently practicing for the upcoming season!

I feel like I now need a nap!

So often we about what is terrible in the world.  The good news stories are usually few and far between or so it seems like lately.  I have to admit that it was absolutely refreshing to read about this feel good story.  An absolutely lovely story about Samantha MacKay's grandfather, Ross MacKay. Samantha is our Step Dance Instructor and her dad, Jamie MacKay was our Volunteer of the Year Award recipient in 2014. Ross MacKay is Jamie's father.  It is nice to know that kindness still prevails in a world so full of uncertainty.  To read about Ross and Samantha's story, please follow this link: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/pei-canadian-tire-ross-mackay-jamie-christmas-1.3927600.
