Finally, It's Friday!

The deadline is fast approaching to get your Doug and Debbie Hall thank you letter in!   As per the requirements of the Doug and Debbie Hall Pipe Band Scholarship, each scholarship student is required to write a thank you letter to Doug and Debbie for their generosity.  The Halls cover the piping and drumming tuition of any Islander between the ages of 8-18. You don't have to write a letter...you can draw a picture, make a card, buy a card.  Get creative!  This is your time to show your appreciation to Doug and Debbie for their kindness.  Letters are due BEFORE December 1st and must be turned in to your instructor.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask James, Chris, Sam and  Kylie. Happy writing!

It has been made official...we have made it to the semi-finals for the Aviva Community Fund! Voting starts again on Monday, December 1st and we need all of the help that we can get.  Call your neighbours, tweet the world, facebook it or sing it from the mountaintops!  Help us upgrade our aging amphitheatre and make your Highland Storm experience a more comfortable one and a safer one for our students and performers.  Please check the blog, facebook and twitter for all of the voting details on Monday! Thank you in advance for your time and continued support!

If the snow has you down, why not purchase a ticket (or tickets!) for a Christmas Getaway?  All you have to do is purchase a ticket in support of The College of Piping Highland Dancers Trip to the 2015 ScotDance Canada Championship Series in London, Ontario. The prize includes: one night accommodation at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel; breakfast for 2 at the Rod Charlottetown Hotel and a $50 gift certificate for one of the Murphy Group restaurants. Tickets: 1 for $5.00 or 3 for $10.00.  The draw date is December 14, 2014.  Contact our Highland Dance Instructor, Kearsney Smith at kearsney.smith@collegeofpiping.com for more information!

And finally....

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our students in the United States.  Have a great holiday weekend filled with lots of turkey and practicing!

Monday News

The brisk temperatures over the weekend and the smattering of snow on the ground have reminded this blogger that winter is almost here.  It was a chilly couple of days and the winter coat came out of hibernation for another season. Snow and chilly temperatures can only mean one thing...that the Christmas recital is just around the corner!  It's on December 14th, so save the date!

The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada had some sad news today.  The Honourable Archie Johnstone C.D., passed away this past weekend.  He was a proud supporter of The College and was a familiar face in the Highland Storm crowd and at the Highland Gathering.  To read his obituary, please follow this link: http://www.inmemoriam.ca/view-announcement-459558-hon-archie-johnstone-c-d.html.  On behalf of the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada, we would like to send our condolences to his family and friends.

Please do not forget that there are no classes or Grade 5 band practice tomorrow (November 11th) as The College is closed for Remembrance Day.  Please use this time to take in service in your community and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Round three of the Aviva Community Fund starts today and we need your help!  Although we had more votes in Round Two than we did in Round One, we did not receive enough votes to automatically advance to the Semi-Finals.  WE HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE AND NEED YOUR HELP.  If we successfully increase our votes through Round 3 – which runs from today through to November 24, we could advance.  The longest part of this process is going on-line and registering with AVIVA Community Fund.  From there, you can save our “idea” and easily go in each day and vote.  Voting each day, from as many unique e-mail addresses that you have, is the key.  AVIVA Community Fund is awarding winning “ideas” with the funds to proceed with fulfilling dreams.  Stage 1 of our dreams – a new roof, sides and seating in our aging theatre.  To assist in our project – voting starts in just under an hour, please proceed to the following page if you are already registered: https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf19453.  If you need to register, this link will take you to the registration page:  https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/users/registration/login. Friday News

November 11th is a day of thought, reflection, gratitude, honour and most of all, remembrance.  We observe this day as a nation and it is something that unites our country.  We hear of the stories from the past and of the present and of the sacrifices made.  We pause and we reflect.  On Tuesday, November 11th, The College will be closed.  No classes will be held and the Grade 5 band practice will not take place.  Please use this time to take in service in your community and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Can you believe it?!  Christmas is just over 50 days away?  Where did time go?  It feels like just yesterday that Highland Storm was on the stage and our bands were headed off to Scotland.  Time really waits for no man.  If the thought of sugar plums (what are those anyways?!), holiday decorations and Christmas baking have your stomach knot up in a big ball of stress, we can help! The College has tons of great gift giving ideas for the various people in your life.

If you want to start the holidays nice and relaxed, why not purchase a ticket for a Christmas getaway?!  You could surprise your loved one with a romantic weekend in Charlottetown and all for a great cause!  By purchasing a ticket you are supporting The College of Piping Highland Dancers Trip to the 2015 ScotDance Canada Championship Series in London, Ontario.

For the Robbie Burns enthusiast in your life, why not purchase a ticket to our Robbie Burns Fundraising Gala?!  A Robbie Burns Fundraising Gala is being planned for Saturday, January 24, 2015.  The reception will begin at 6:30 pm with a traditional Robbie Burns Roast Beef Dinner at 7:00 pm.  Entertainment will be provided by the faculty and students of The College of Piping. The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada did not advance automatically to the semi-finals of the Aviva Community Fund, there is one last chance to get there.  The next and final round of voting will start on Monday and we need everyone's help! Every vote counts to get us back in to the running. We are hoping to access funds to upgrade our aging amphitheatre by having a new roof made, new walls and more comfortable cushions on the benches. By changing our existing venue through the purchase of upgraded materials and equipment, we will be able to create an environment that is safer and more modern, thus helping to enhance the experience for both our performers and visitors.  This competition is won by votes and we need each and every one of you to assist us in the voting process.  Please check this space out on Monday, November 10th for the link to start voting again. EVERY VOTE COUNTS!!!

Speaking of Christmas...it's just over 50 days away!  Are you ready?!  The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada has some lovely gifts for the piper, drummer, dancer or Scottish enthusiast on your list.  We have comfortable hoodies, flannel pajama pants and sweatpants to ward off the chill on those long winter nights.  We have water bottles for those sweaty dance classes or band practices.  There are mugs destined for hot chocolate and even wellies to help you navigate through the winter slush.  For the ultimate piping enthusiast we even have pipe chanter lamps made by Mike Dupuis from Truro, Nova Scotia.  Mike is a member of the Grade 4 College of Piping Pipe Band and is quite a handy woodworker!  Check out the gift shop for all of your gift giving needs!

Happy Monday!

We aren't close enough to make the Top 20 for this round in the Aviva voting but we've promised to help our friends at W.A. Day School (who are only about 40 votes away) get into the Top 20.  If we do this for them, their community will help us for our next voting round which will be starting in a week or so.  The link is https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf19872.  If you have any questions about this, please let us know.  I've voted, have you?!

People are still talking about the generous anonymous donation of our new parking lot!  It even made it into the Journal Pioneer editorial on October 29th.  Please follow this link to read all about it: http://www.journalpioneer.com/Opinion/Editorials/2014-10-29/article-3920797/Good-things-still-happen/1.  This is something the College couldn’t have afforded to pay for, so we are absolutely thrilled.  Thanks to Curran & Briggs who did an awesome job and again, THANK YOU to our donor!

Don't forget that tomorrow at 3pm is the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada's AGM.  It will be held in the main hall at The College.  All members of the public are welcome to attend.
